Atlanta, GA

From looking at my current work, you can quickly understand that I don't take portraits, or even choose to include people in most photographs. But recently I have started to think about some new projects, which would include portraits of people I would meet, possibly beginning to describe the current (failed??) state of the American Dream.

I recently spent 3 days in Atlanta photographing, on the final day I was down to my last 3 sheets of film and I was set to fly back to Philly in a few hours. I told myself that I had to shoot at least one portrait on this trip, so I wandered around downtown Atlanta to a park where people were playing chess, I started a conversation with a guy who was waiting for someone to play.

As I was talking with him, I was thinking, "how can I just come out and ask to photograph him?" He asked if I wanted to play, at first, I said no, then quickly said, "well I'll play, but only if I can take your photo after". He agreed, we played chess for two hours, ended up in a stalemate then walked into the park to take this photo below.

I'm not sure how I feel about this resulting photograph, but I think it is an important stepping stone for future photos.
